The costs of oil extraction are rising sharply. This financing burden is likely to crowd out other sectors and the economy may reach a point where it simply cannot provide the capital that oil extraction requires. Shell already has to borrow to pay its dividend and BP’s is on hold precisely because of sustainability factors.

Big firms to take hard hit on energy costs

WITH ONE fell swoop, the Commission for Energy Regulation intends adding an extra €157 million to the Republic’s electricity bills from October.
The worst hit will be the so-called “large energy users”, in other words big companies with big workforces, many of which are owned by the multinational investors that the State is courting so desperately at the moment in its efforts to turn the economy around.
Sandra Quinn of energy consultancy McKinnon Clarke (MC) explains that a typical SME could be looking at an increase of €690 a month or €8,280 a year.
Much bigger businesses face a much bigger hit. For example, manufacturers such as pharmaceutical plants could face increases of between €16,000 and €34,500 a year, depending on their energy needs.

Government defends electricity price hike

Minister for Agriculture Brendan Smith has defended the Government’s decision to increase electricity prices by 5% in October.
The increase is due to the public service obligation levy - a charge designed to improve the country’s security of energy supply and to develop renewable energy.
Mr Smith said while no-one liked to see prices rise, it should be noted that prices have dropped by 24% to the EU average in the last year. He said the decision also reflects Ireland’s obligations to the EU on renewable energy.

It is charged with looking at the possibility of disposing of public-sector assets, including commercial State companies.

Electricity prices may rise over green levy

A PROPOSAL to pay for green energy incentives and supports for peat-fired power plants could add €40 a year to consumers’ electricity bills and increase industries’ costs by five-figure sums.
Every year the Commission for Energy Regulation imposes a public service obligation charge on all electricity users to pay for incentives for renewable energy and to support peat-fired power plants.
